Montessori Teacher Training
SEAFOM provides funding to eligible individuals to obtain Montessori teaching diplomas through the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) at all levels: Assistant to Infancy (birth to 3yrs), Primary (3-6yrs), Elementary (6-12yrs), and Adolescence (12-15yrs). Candidates for training must be admitted into an Association Montessori Internationale training center in the USA and must possess credentials for teaching in Alaska’s public schools, or present an educational plan for achieving such licensing credentials if required by a potential employer.
SEAFOM teacher training awards are considered “sponsorships” and include a multi-year obligation from the funding recipient to diligently pursue employment at a public or private Montessori school in Juneau, Alaska or other established AMI-based school in Southeast Alaska. SEAFOM cannot guarantee the employment of teachers, but endeavors to prepare candidates who are committed to Montessori education and to living in Southeast Alaska.
SEAFOM reviews teacher training applications on an ongoing basis. Sponsorship awards vary depending on available funding and the specific needs for teaching positions. Applications must be received at least 120 days prior to the start of the AMI diploma training program that the candidate has selected.
SEAFOM also supports Montessori Certified Teachers to obtain their Alaska Teaching Certificate to be able to work in Montessori Programs in the Public School System.
AMI Teacher Training courses vary in schedule and delivery methods. Currently, the most popular course format in the in United States is called "blended" - it combines on-line learning with on-site learning, and spreads the coursework over many months to make it possible for teachers to attain their diploma while simultaneously teaching and/or observing during the school year. New course schedules are continually be developed. See https://montessori-ami.org/training-programmes/diploma-courses for current course offerings.

I am so thankful for Southeast Alaska Friends of Montessori! I completed my training with Montessori Northwest, and it would not have been possible for me to fulfill my dreams of becoming a Montessori teacher without their support. While student teaching in the classrooms, and now as a classroom teacher, I see how much support SEAFOM provides not only to teachers in training, but how they continue to support the current teachers, the staff, and the students - Callie Conerton

Thank heavens for SEAFOM! This amazing non-profit organization, started over two decades ago to support Montessori Education in Southeast Alaska, has purchased most of the amazing material manipulatives that grace the shelves of our classrooms. That's not all they do however. SEAFOM supported me and the community by sponsoring me to the year-long AMI Montessori Elementary training. In fact, all of the teachers currently working in the program have owe some part of their education to SEAFOM grant funding.
The AMI Montessori training I received with SEAFOM sponsorship, and my subsequent years teaching at Montessori Borealis have enriched my life in countless ways. It has resulted in a satisfying career teaching in a wholistic style which facilitates the construction of strong children. Working for the Juneau School District in this capacity also comes with good working conditions, a respectable compensation package (pay, working conditions, personal leave, professional leave, health insurance and retirement benefits). In addition to providing an avenue for rewarding useful work, the Montessori training SEAFOM sponsors future teachers to, has reframed entirely how I personally view the world. Montessori has imbued me with a more connected outlook while simultaneously filling in the gaps in my own K-12 education. If you love to teach and are looking for a time tested system that graces children with a great education while nurturing their love of learning, perhaps SEAFOM supported Montessori training is for you.
